Over the past few years, PK Electrical is an electrical engineering company that has been a sub-consultant for some major recreation projects. The following is a small sample of a few recreation projects that we have worked on recently. Carla Madison Central Denver Recreation Center

PK Electrical was a sub-consultant for this new 62,000 square foot recreation center located in Denver, Colorado off of East Colfax Avenue. This recreation center has various amenities including:

  1. Community Spaces
  2. Classroom Spaces
  3. Natatorium
  4. Fitness Area
  5. Gymnasium

PK Electrical’s scope of work addressed the design of power, lighting, data, CATV, fire alarm, security, access controls, audio/visual systems, lighting risk assessment, coordination, with an aquatics consultant, as well as the design of site lighting and utilities. Multiple alternates were designed into this project for budgetary considerations by the owner. PK Electrical performed value engineering services at the consideration document level to assist the owner in their budgetary decision-making process.

This facility was designed to LEED-NC (New Construction) Gold Certification and Energy Star levels. The construction budget was $44 million. The recreation center opened in January 2018. Since its opening, this recreation center was named one of the top ten best places to soak and swim in 2018 through an article in Westword. This recreation center has both a lap pool and a leisure pool. The leisure pool includes a lazy river and a slide; the lap pool is 25 yards with eight lanes and two diving boards. Schedules for both pools, as well as other amenities, are available on the City and County of Denver’s website.

UNR Weigand Fitness Center

PK Electrical design consultants and engineers have worked on various projects for the University of Nevada (if you would like to view our other Higher Education projects, please click here). In another one of our more recent projects, we worked as a sub-consultant for WORTHGROUP on the Weigand Fitness Center. This fitness center is 4-stories and 110,000 square feet. During construction, the students at the University of Nevada were ecstatic about their new workout facility. The Weigand Fitness Center replaced the Lombardi Recreation Center for primary student use, providing more space and new equipment. This building is equipped with a large amount of open space and large windows. Each floor has a different purpose and houses equipment and exercise spaces. The following is an outline of each floor:

  • First Floor – Lobby, reception area, circulation (sports equipment checkout), male and female locker rooms, strength training areas, training, and instructional spaces, and administrative offices. Exercise stairs begin on this level.
  • Second Floor – Five fitness rooms which are used for a variety of fitness classes or personal use when classes are not in session.
  • Third Floor – Three full-court basketball courts, stretching areas, and cardio areas which include: treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes, rowers, stair masters, and additional weight machines. The basketball courts double as a space for intramural sports.
  • Fourth Floor – Hold the 1/8th-mile running track and houses additional stretching areas. The exercise stairs end on this level.

The scope of work for our electrical engineering company included complete lighting design and lighting control systems, power distribution and branch circuiting, communication system infrastructure, cabling and termination, fire alarm design, emergency/standby power systems, security system design, site lighting/electrical, electrical calculations, electrical specifications, and electrical estimates of probable costs. For this project, the REVIT design was in line with LEED Silver Requirements, but the certification was not pursued. The Weigand Fitness Center opened in February of 2017 and the construction costs were $47.5 million.

Douglas County Community and Senior Center

The Douglas County Community and Senior Center is an 83,500 square foot concrete masonry unit construction building located in Gardnerville, Nevada. It opened during the summer of 2014.

The site features include:

  • Three independent entries for multiple access points to each facility.
  • 218 parking spaces (11 handicap accessible parking spaces).

The building was constructed in a flood-prone area which required elevated floors and retention basins. The building exterior was constructed using materials and proportions that reflected the historical agricultural architecture and agrarian accents of Douglas County; this included appropriate masonry colors, opening detailing, roof pitches, and corrugated metal siding accents. The interior materials are reflective of the exterior, including exposed CMU in many areas. Daylighting is provided by a number of light well monitors in the low-rise and a 72-foot long translucent skylight at the ridge of the gymnasium that minimizes illumination requirements during daylight hours.

The gymnasium is a two-level structure with four basketball courts, two racquetball courts, a 36-foot tall climbing wall, arcade, and recreational offices at grade level. The second level includes a 3-lane perimeter running track and three fitness equipment areas. The gymnasium also contains additional exiting in order to accommodate functions for up to 1,840 occupants.

The low-rise portion of the community center includes a large banquet room with sit down dining for 300 or receptions with up to 760 occupants, pre-school, senior day care, community health nurse, and four activity rooms for multiple uses including art, yoga, crafts, etc. Douglas County has relocated its Parks and Recreation Administration Offices into the single-story structure. This department now manages the facility.

As sub-consultant to TSK Architects, PK Electrical designed the electrical service, power distribution, lighting and lighting control, low voltage system including telephone/data systems, point-of-sale systems, CATV/MATV systems, security/CCTV systems, audio/visual and intercom systems, sound systems, and nurse call systems. This design-build project was constructed with a budget of $18.2 million.
