Washoe County School District is building a new high school on the former Wildcreek Golf Course. Procter Hug High School is WCSD’s first new high school designed and built since 2003. Currently, under construction, the school will have three stories and span 295,000 sq ft inclusive of a 435-seat performing arts center, three gymnasiums, labs for art and music, and more than 80 classrooms consisting of 40 general learning rooms, 15 shared group rooms, 17 specialized labs, 11 science labs, a student commons, and a JROTC (Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) room. The state-of-the-art design mimics that of a college campus.

The new school will take the place of the current and aged Procter Hug High School, and all of the students who are currently zoned for this school will be shifted as well as additional zoning for 700 more students to relieve overcrowding in Spanish Springs High School. The new facility has a capacity of 2,200 students.

The district has chosen to officially name the new Wildcreek Area High School after the school that it is replacing, Procter R. Hug High School. From 1927 to 1937, Procter Hug served as a teacher, coach, and vice-principal at Sparks High School. He then served as Sparks superintendent from 1937 to 1956. In 1956, he became the assistant superintendent for the Washoe County School District. He then served as superintendent from 1959 to 1966. He was later elected to the State Senate. “For 38 years, he was an outstanding Nevada educator and dedicated his career to public service,” school officials said in the survey. “The current Procter Hug High School has been named after him since it first opened in 1969.”
